In 2E 541, Daggerfall was threatened by the Reachmen under Durcorach the Black Drake, whose army gathered in front of the city gates. Two years after his call to arms, the Kingdom of Daggerfall, in conjunction with the Order of Diagna and the newly-named Kingdom of Sentinel launched an assault on the Orcish capital. It was Golkarr's grand proclamation that lauded the Orcish raiders across the Bjoulsae River that forced Joile's hand and led to the following events. In fact, King Joile's mention of Wayrest in his letter serves as one of the settlement's earliest mentions in recorded history. At the time, King Golkarr laid a substantial claim over Stormhaven and impeded trade lanes around Wayrest and to the Breton heartland. In 1E 948, King Joile of Daggerfall sent a letter to the warrior and leader of the Order of Diagna, Gaiden Shinji for his assistance in his war against the Orcs of Orsinium. By 1E 609, under the rule of King Thagore, Daggerfall was already the preeminent economic, cultural, and military force in southern High Rock, and it remained so for millennia. The kingdom became a power center for the Direnni clan, but still continued to thrive after they lost power in High Rock. However, Daggerfall actually thrived under Skyrim's rule and thus had an advantageous position over its neighbors upon independence. Skyrim only maintained control for roughly a century before the War of Succession cost it all its holdings in other modern-day provinces. Numerous legends exist for its name, including that the first chieftain threw a dagger and let the spot where it fell act as the border. First Era ĭaggerfall was founded a little before 1E 246 by invading Nords from Skyrim, who brought a rough sort of civilization with them during the Skyrim Conquests. Still, large and bloody wars with its neighbors were common throughout the first and second eras. The kingdom often cooperated with its neighbors throughout history to fight against Orcs and Orsinium. During times of peace, the nobility of Daggerfall and Wayrest were often known to vacation in Sentinel. At many times throughout history the conflict was merely economic. The approach DFU took is almost the complete opposite of another project that for a time was being developed concurrently, DaggerXL.While all of the Iliac Bay region constantly jockeyed for power, two primary rivals for power emerged: Sentinel and Wayrest.

Hell, even I contributed a tad to the modding scene and I've never used Unity, my contributions involved me assisting a mod fix linux video playback, and I made some art assets.

Even with only a passing understanding of the Unity game engine, it's still easy to contribute to DFUnity in some manner.

odd.From what I can gather the choice to use Unity was ultimately to speed up development time, and to make the result easily moddable, which is a heavily desirable trait in any Bethesda game. This means it really can live forever with an up to date cross-platform game engine. Daggerfall Unity isn't quite the same though of course, as it does have some unique enhancements so it's more like "Classic Daggerfall Plus" as the developer calls it.

Since it's such an old game, it's also freely available as Bethesda Softworks put it up as a free download back in 2009. Plenty more smaller and varied fixes also made it in, there was a lot of little bits of fine tuning. The biggest change appears to be the jumping ability, with it now giving small jumps to low levels and bigger / longer jumps for higher levels. They can't match the movement system exactly, instead going for a system that enables you to feel more powerful and faster when you're a higher level. There's more ways to configure the HUD now in the settings file too, and a big overhaul to the movement system to better match the original. What's new with this release? Large HUD support, along with the ability to have the HUD docked or undocked meaning it can either stretch or have a more fixed size - good for bigger resolutions where it might get too stretched. It's not finished though, as they will move onto bug fixing, minor adjustments, modding, translations and so on. Going by their roadmap, that sure is a lot of completed items. Daggerfall Unity is the open source game engine built with Unity for running the 1996 classic The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall and it's coming along very nicely.Ī new release just went up with Daggerfall Unity 0.10.28, which the developer mentions is now "feature complete" and so it will be moving from Alpha to Beta status soon.
